Sweet Sixteen, an exhibition of print exchange portfolios from the Maryland Printmakers between 1989 through 2005, opens at the Gallery 101, Georgetown University, on March 1, 2005. Displaying over 40 images, the show includes works ranging from intaglio prints to collagraph prints. The exhibit runs until April 22, 2005. The gallery hours are 12 pm – 4 pm Tuesday through Saturday except for school and Federal holidays. The gallery will be closed for Spring Break (March 6-12) and Easter break (March 24-28). An opening reception will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2005 from 2 pm – 5 pm in conjunction with the Southern Graphics Council International Conference.

The annual print exchange has been a very important part of the Maryland Printmakers organization. In the early days of the organization’s development the concept of building print portfolios for exchange between members was heavily discussed and by the end of the first year as an organization the active members were printing editions directed toward the exchange. The exchange allows the participants and members to see the variety of techniques and approaches that a printer might use to create an image. Sweet Sixteen exhibits prints selected from the Maryland Printmakers portfolio archives housed at the Washington County Arts Center in Hagerstown, Md. Georgetown University Gallery Director and Professor Evan Reed, with assistance of past Maryland Printmakers President Calvin Custen, selected prints from the various portfolios from the past 16 years of Maryland Printmakers’ existence.

Founded in 1989 by Sam Peters and John Sparks, Maryland Printmakers is an organization that educates the public concerning the techniques, nature and functions of printmaking. It encourages and advances the art of printmaking. Maryland Printmakers, Inc., is a charitable non-profit corporation.

The objective of the organization is to promote printmaking to the general public and artists working in the media through sponsorship of juried, non-juried, traveling exhibits, slide registry, newsletters, charitable and educational lectures, demonstrations and programs. Membership is open to any individual committed to the promotion of printmaking. Maryland Printmakers currently has more than 250 members internationally.

Maryland Printmakers is also a member of the American Print Alliance, a non-profit consortium of printmakers' councils in the United States and Canada. The Alliance publishes a journal of critical literature about the print arts and a guide to printmaking workshops, curates exhibitions, provides information and is an advocate for prints, paper works and book arts.

The Southern Graphics Council International Conference is March 30 – April 3, 2005.
