had an exhibit, "Prints of Old Europe" at the Touchstone Gallery (see www.touchstonegallery.com), which featured a new approach she has utilized a combination of techniques including digital photos and lithography for a new and dramatic approach to image development. It’s a whole new genre, and very impressive! Having viewed some of her work in progress, your editor can attest to the changes in style and subject matter. Her treatments are indeed impressive. Congratulations on this important breakthrough, Mary!

Eileen Foti |
a past author in InPrint, and former master printmaker at Rutgers, has changed directions, using her foreign experiences working with women in Africa. "A Ripple in the Water: Healing Through Art," is narrated by Charlayne Hunter-Gault, and it focuses on the work of South African Artist/Activist Kim Berman. Berman uses art to achieve positive social transformation with regard to HIV/AIDS awareness, poverty alleviation, and the empowerment of women and children across South Africa. The video was screened on PBS in April. The video will be shown on PBS stations. Eileen says, "I got a $15,000 NJ Council for the Humanities Scholar Grant and another $5,000 of finishing money from Johnson & Johnson." She reports that until then, her "co-producer (Patty Piroh) and I did it all with car washes and bake sale—so to speak—before!" just to develop funding for the project. Congratulations, Eileen!

Caroline Thorington |
reports that she recently attended the opening receptions for two exhibitions by Boston Printmakers, the "2007 North American Print Biennial" and "60 Years of North American Prints—Collecting from the Boston Printmakers." Her attendance included a lecture by the juror for the Print Biennial, Judith Hecker, who is Assistant Curator in the Department of Prints and Illustrated Books at MoMA in New York City. Caroline was impressed with the message on prints in general, a show she had curated and the Biennial she had juried. There were 1900 prints from 600 artists among the submissions, which were submitted either on slides or digitally. The curating became a monumental task requiring review of the entire body of work multiple times before acceptance in the show. Prize winners were chosen from a viewing of the actual pieces. According to Caroline, the criteria for this judging included selection of a wide variety of works what represented the best examples of what had been submitted. Eschewing selection based on a common theme, this juror had sought a wider variety.
Caroline reports that Aline Feldman was at the openings, having a print among those selected for the "60 Years" exhibition (Congratulations, Aline!). The juror for this exhibition, David Acton of the Worcester (MA) Arts Museum, had chosen prints from among prize winners over the last 60 years of North American Biennials. Caroline noted her fascination with the evolution and variety of prints over that period styles and subject matter instead.
The Boston Printmakers have planned a number of events and shows in celebration of their 60th anniversary. The two shows described run until April 1st, with other related shows, lectures and panel discussions. A complete listing can be found on their website, www.bostonprintmakers.org.
Thanks for the news, Caroline!

exhibit at Touchstone Gallery, "Prints of Old Europe," (April 11– May 6, 2007) shows another dimension of her work. Traveling with a digital camera in hand, Ott captured images that she has made into original, hand-pulled prints.
Although the images are modern, her screen prints evoke a sense of history. Impressions of Crete are shown in overlays of colors and designs. Sunflowers from Slovenia glow in screen prints that incorporate oil paint and wax. Intaglios* present architectural details from the Czech Republic, France, Germany and Italy.

Alice Sorkowitz |
has departed as the Secretary of the Maryland Printmakers, although as of this writing she is still in our geographic area. We owe Alice a round of applause and thanks for all the work she’s done for the group during her tenure!
An exhibition of the work of her work was held at the Ozmosis Gallery in Bethesda, MD, during the month of June. "This Side of Sanity," a retrospective exhibit encompassed works from 1975 through 2005. Her latest was a print on special canvas which is receptive to water based inks. The work measures 48" x 90," her largest so far. That size canvas may be ordered through the Dick Smith Catalog. She prefers Graphic Chemicals water based inks although she finds that the white tends to dry much more slowly than other colors.
In many of her monoprints, Alice uses a glue gun to seal the image on plastic plates. The raised design is then inked with rollers and printed either on canvas or paper. She uses hand made papers from Mexico, which she bought when she lived there several years ago.

Bridget Sue Lambert's |
newest work, ''The Difference Between Success and Failure'' was on display in Pyramid Atlantic's Kunst Vault Gallery from March 26 through May 21, 2004. It was the inaugural exhibition in Pyramid Atlantic's new home, located at 8230 Georgia Avenue in downtown Silver Spring's Arts and Entertainment district.
Ms. Lambert was recently awarded a 2004 Individual Artist Award in the Visual Arts from the Maryland State Arts Council for her works on paper. Her unique installation -- made up of 110, 8'' by 8'' tiles, each hand pressed by the artist from a large scene of a series of power cables and towers -- will present viewers with the experience of walking on top of a high-voltage powerline As you move across the tiles you will notice several small video monitors embedded into the piece which play video clips of what appear to be rain droplets and birds flying in circles, as well as two obscure scenes that challenge the imagination of the viewer.
The Kunst Vault Gallery is designed to accommodate works that include audio and moving images. A small gallery housed in a former safe vault, it offers unique opportunities for visual artists who incorporate sound, animation and projection elements into their works.
The exhibit was free to the public. Pyramid Atlantic is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on the weekend when classes are in session or by appointment.
For further information, please contact Pyramid Atlantic at (301) 608-9101 or via email at tharris@pyramid-atlantic.org. Visit our website at: www.pyramidatlanticartcenter.org for directions and more details.

Eva Vacca |
A special word of thanks to Eva Vacca, our membership chair for the past year plus. Eva has taken leave of all things Maryland for a move to Los Angeles, California, where she will doubtlessly add to the artistic awareness and cultural opulence of that area. We will sorely miss her artistic and organizational skills. As of press time, we did not have a geographical address for Eva, but she will retain her e-mail address: evacca@sexnam.cz . Good luck, Eva!
